ACADEMIC YEAR 2016-2017

Advocates provided 2601 interventions to 324 survivors. Our interventions increased to 2601 from 1742 in 2015-2016.

These interventions totaled 901 hours of advocacy.

The on-call Victim Assistance Team volunteers received 117 calls and provided 60 hours of these interventions.

DEMOGRAPHICS & VIOLENCE INFO (CALCULATED FOR THE 247 NEW CASES)

DEMOGRAPHICS:

  • CSU Affiliation: 52% undergraduate student (19% first year, 10% sophomore, 10% junior, 8% senior), 5% graduate student, 43% affiliation unknown (could include parents, faculty/staff, callers who chose to remain anonymous, and others).
  • Gender: 78% women, 14% male, 2% trans*, 6% no response
  • Race: 5% Asian American/Pacific Islander, 5% Black, 12% Hispanic/Latinx, 2% Multiracial, 1% Native American, 44% White, 31% unable to obtain
  • Sexual orientation: 10% Bisexual, 1% gay, 38% heterosexual, 1% lesbian, 1% pansexual, 2% Queer, 1% other, 46% unable to obtain
  • Of the 246 new survivors, 77% were primary survivors and 20% were secondary survivors (3% no response).

TYPE OF VIOLENCE:

  • 50.6% sexual assault, 5.1% stalking, 19.1% intimate partner violence, 5.4% adult survivor of child sexual abuse, 5.4% sexual harassment, 1.6% attempted sexual assault, 9.3% other, 3.5% no response
  • Time since assault: 9.8% less than 24 hours, 18% 24 hours -5 days, 8.6% within past month, 18.4% 1 month to 1 year, 9.8% 1-5 years, 2.3% 5+ years, 11.3% ongoing, 4.3% historical (time unknown), 5.9% recent (time unknown), 11.6% unable to obtain
  • Location of assault: 60.9% off campus, 15.2% on campus, 3.5% on and off campus, 2.7% Primarily Electronic, 17.7% unable to obtain

PERPETRATOR INFORMATION:

  • Perpetrator’s Relationship to Survivor: 18% acquaintance, 7.8% dating relationship, 2.7% date, 12.1% friend, 6.6% stranger, 9.4% previously dating, 1.6% current spouse/intimate partner, 4.7% former intimate partner, 1.2% teacher/professor, .4% service provider, 2% parent/guardian, 2.7% other relative, 6.6% co-worker, 1.2% other, 24.2% unable to obtain
  • Perpetrator Gender: 78.9% Men, 5.5% Women, 15.6% unable to obtain

SERVICE ENGAGEMENT:

  • Reporting to police: 29% reported to the police.
  • Reporting to the University: 14.2% of reported to the university. (35.2% of the cases were not eligible to report to the university because the perpetrator was non-affiliated).
  • An additional 7.1% were mandatory reports.
